WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Mike Myers. I’m the Director of Global IT Infrastructure at Toluna, a market research firm in Wilton, CT.
WHEN DID YOU START TRACKING MACROS AND WHAT WAS YOUR REASONING?
I started tracking macros in September 2017. Even with the amount of exercise provided by CrossFit, I was unable to lose the weight I wanted to, especially the body fat.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL DEFINITION OF FLEXIBLE EATING OR TRACKING MACROS?
My definition would be something like “everything in moderation”. If I want something, I eat it (or drink it!). I always think about how I can fit something in to my day that I enjoy. Tracking is easy, once you figure out how it fits in to your daily routine.
WHAT WAS YOUR DIET LIKE BEFORE TRACKING MACROS?
Before tracking, my diet was very carb heavy and protein deficient. I never realized how little protein I was eating each day. There were also probably way too many processed foods that weren’t helping at all.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BREAKTHROUGH SINCE TRACKING MACROS?
Since tracking, I’ve become very good at knowing where I may be lacking certain macros at different times of the day. This is especially true if I am not in a normal situation, like traveling for business. It’s not always easy to find my normal foods. Having an idea of macro types and best portion sizes is very helpful with staying on course.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS REGARDING FLEXIBLE EATING AND BEYOND?
My goals are to always keep track of what goes in to my body. I would like to stay in a place where I am physically fit and healthy. Flexible eating goes a long way towards that goal.
WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT GUIDELINES YOU GIVE YOURSELF?
These are pretty easy… Everything in moderation. Make sure you give the plan a chance to work. Tomorrow is another day.
Taking a day here and there, especially the unplanned day of overindulgence, is not a bad thing. Staying on track a majority of the time is what makes those days feel that much better!!
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU HAD WHEN STARTING TRACKING MACROS THAT COULD HELP NEWBIES?
This is one of my guidelines: make sure you give the plan a chance to work. Most days are not going to be perfect. Be patient. In my case, it took 51 years to get my body to the place it was. I was not going to change that overnight. By being patient and following the plan provided by Georgette, I have been able to make small gains every week. Any gain, no matter how small it is, can be considered a victory. When you put all those small victories together, you’ll find that you achieve large goals.
